Jonny Cooper’s dismissal from the first half the All-Ireland closing changed the complex of the decider, and in the second half, Kerry fought back with the numerical edge to save a draw.
Like every card on a point, it was subject to much debate, but the Sky Sports panel have been in agreement referee David Gough made the choice.
“Jonny is a combative player, we understand that,” said ex-Dublin star Senan Connell.
“He likes to make contact. He’s very aggressive in the attack. There should have been a telephone to take him off.
“In David Gough’s head, there’s an accumulation of fouls here. Regardless of what else, you need to be disciplined in the handle once you’re after giving a certain amount of frees. It was said by me here in studio [following the first ], Jonny will have to be cautious here. The accumulative fouls are currently going to hurt him, and they did in the end.
“[It was] persistent fouling and he deserved it.”
Peter Canavan agreed, implying that the Dublin direction should have transferred the Na Fianna guard off David Clifford following his very first booking.
“Right awayhe had to be taken him off [Clifford], since Jonny Cooper can’t perform any other manner but be full-blooded and attack the ball,” said Canavan.
“But we are waiting for many years now to watch Jim Gavin reveal some symptoms of complacency – did he have too much confidence in Jonny Cooper? Why didn’t Michael Fitzsimons move onto the celebrity guy? David Clifford was playing very well.”
Sky Sports’ sideline reporter Damian Lawlor added the thought-process of Gough and circumstance:
Lawlor stated:”I’ve been connected up to this referee David Gough during the game, also to be fair to him, while it was a tough decision for him to make within an All-Ireland final, he’d warned Jonny Cooper three times throughout the first half of repeat infringements occurring.”
The fact Cooper’s dismissal has been two yellow cards as opposed to a red means he will be free to play in the replay.
